Edythe Broad and her husband, Eli Broad, who died in April 2021, have been giants in L.A.’s philanthropic world, donating an estimated $4 billion. The legacy of giving will live on through Edythe Broad, whom the foundation has described as the quiet force behind ́the couple’s generosity. Edythe was the inspiration to name the Edye, a 100-seat black box theater by the Broad Stage at Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center. The Foundation, established in 1999 with an endowment that has exceeded $2 billion — provided funding to institutions forced to temporarily close during the pandemic, including the Broad Center, The Broad museum and the Broad Stage.
